Government

The challenge was to provide the relationships between Virtual Machines and underlying Storage Disks based upon Microsoft Hyper-V technology

This customer is a Government Organisation based in London, UK. They use BMC Discovery to discover IT infrastructure assets across the organisation and their IT landscape is based upon Microsoft Hyper-V technology

BMC Discovery was also being used for discovery of SAN / Storage devices however the customer had noticed a gap in the discovery data whereby Virtual Machines were not being linked to the underlying SAN / Storage meaning that full dependency relationships to support problem, impact and change were not possible. After raising a support case with BMC Software it was identified that full storage discovery was not supported on Hyper-V platforms.

Tekwurx was approached by the customer to extend the current storage discovery capability to close the gaps on linking Virtual machines to storage when running on Hyper-V Technology

The customer identified 1 key requirement:

  • To provide visibility of Virtual machine disks and the relationship to underlying Storage Volumes in order to support problem, change and incident.

The Solution.

Tekwurx, in partnership with the organisation, built upon the existing Storage Discovery capability provided within BMC Discovery and extended this through the development of custom TPL to support Storage Volume relationship linking to Virtual Machine disks running on Hyper-V platforms.

The TPL based solution uses standard, out of the box, Microsoft OS calls and commands to interrogate the Hyper-V server to provide details of the storage, storage volumes, storage identifiers and Virtual machine mounted disks and file systems. This is then stitched together so that a Virtual Machine and it’s mounted disks and filesystems can be related back to specific storage volume supporting these.

Results which exceeded expectations.

  • Automated discovery of Storage attached to Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Accurate discovery of dependency relationships between Virtual Machine and underlying storage volume on Hyper-V technology
  • Closure of gaps in out of the box BMC Discovery for storage on Microsoft Hyper-V technology.

The challenge was to extend ServiceNow capability to discover SolidFire Storage devices.

When undertaking a Asset Management and CMDB review the company quickly became aware of a key challenge – gaining a clear view of the IT landscape estate wide including all the relationship dependencies between hardware and software and keeping this view up to date.

Many companies find it difficult to gain, and even more so to maintain, an accurate up to date view of the IT estate yet without this information businesses can find it difficult to effectively and efficiently plan for change and troubleshoot and fix issues when outages occur.

The business therefore identified a list of key objectives:

  • Gain an accurate infrastructure view
  • Improve compliance across the infrastructure
  • Identify dependencies between devices

The Solution.

The organization already had ServiceNow deployed yet were updating the platform through manual data loads. They approached Tekwurx for assistance in creating a system that provided the automated, estate wide view of different storage technologies.

Prior to the capability provided by Tekwurx, if the organization wanted an overview of the storage estate they needed to liaise with multiple teams and take data from various sources and spreadsheets which had been manually gathered and entered.

With a mix of both ServiceNow Discovery for supported storage platforms and the customised integration between ServiceNow and SolidFire Storage Platform this data is now gathered automatically and regularly and presented back to the organization through the ServiceNow platform. The organization can now access estate wide storage inventory information that is always up to date.

Results which exceeded expectations.

  • Automating storage discovery has enabled up to date configuration data to be available within the ServiceNow platform.
  • The custom API integrations between ServiceNow and Storage Platforms has enabled the collection of currently unsupported storage device details.
  • Accurate configuration discovery has enabled IT policies to be implemented and followed – minimizing risk and improving compliance and standardization.
  • Inclusion of these devices within ServiceNow has enabled the use of Change and Incident management.

Logistics

The challenge was to provide secure integration between BMC Discovery and the CA PAM vault.

The Logistics company has grown from its beginning to a present day corporation operating in over 200 territories with over 100,000 vehicles handling 13 million packages a day.

To ensure high performance, reliability and an understanding of the relationships and dependencies of the systems that support this delivery network the group are implementing a number of initiatives and processes. Underpinning a large number of these initiatives is the accurate supply of automated discovery data via BMC Discovery.

The security around access to systems, account and password management resulted in CA PAM being the centralised authentication vault. BMC Discovery could only be used within the organisation if the credentials used for discovery were managed and maintained within CA PAM.

The Solution.

Tekwurx created an integration between BMC Discovery and CA PAM using the Tekwurx uControl platform which was also being used by the organisation to provide centralised management of multiple BMC Discovery appliances and Application Modelling / Maintenance.

This provides a robust, fully vendor supported integration allowing BMC Discovery to access up to date accounts / credentials that are managed and maintained within CA PAM.

Results which exceeded expectations.

  • Integration with CA PAM enabling centralised management of all credentials with a 24 hour password rotation policy.
  • Approval from security team to deploy BMC Discovery across organisation
  • A distributed BMC Discovery architecture deployed throughout the organisation providing visibility into assets and relationships within 10 days

  • Automating business service views in Compuware Vantage has provided quick, up to date, accurate view of root causes when problems occur.
  • An accurate up to date view of the infrastructure has helped identify configuration and performance issues, including single point of failures and provide planning input into IT projects.
